A glitch fare is when an airline accidentally heavily discounts airfare. Sometimes you can purchase international flights for under $200 round-trip. Both LJ and I went to Kenya (the flight we met on) for under $200 round-trip! We know of other people who traveled to the UAE from NYC for less than $200.
Here’s what you what you need to know about glitch fares:
How in the world do glitch fares happen?
So many reasons! Sometimes it’s human error and an employee enters incorrect price information. Perhaps, a currency conversation went wrong or someone forgot to include all the fees such as fuel or security fees that make up the fare total price. Other times it’s simply a computer glitch.
Are airlines obligated to honor glitch fares?
No. But oftentimes they do. Now more than ever, airlines don’t want herds of angry customers and bad press. However, if they don’t honor the price, you will be given a full refund. So if you see a glitch fare that you want just buy it!
How do you find glitch fares?
The best way to find glitch fares is to check flight deal websites such as The Flight Deal, Scott’s Cheap Flights, and Thrifty Traveler. Sometimes they also announce deals on their social sites as well.
How quickly must I book when I see a glitch fare?
Our advice is to book immediately. There is normally only a few hour window before the airline notices the mistake and corrects the price.
Tell us about a time you booked a glitch fare.
Best of luck finding your next glitch fare! Don’t think about it, just book it!
Wishing you love, light and happy travels!
